A HOUSE FOR JIMI HENDRIX
THE HOUSE OF FREE FEELING

What is this, “free feeling ?”

We don’t even know what feeling is, how would we know anything about “free feeling ?”

But maybe this is a redundancy anyway, because feeling is, by definition, free.

And Ingmar Bergman was right: in the field of emotions we are all illiterates.

So maybe The House of Free Feeling would be nothing less than The House of Illiteracy ?

Perhaps, yes…

Didn’t Picasso say that it took him four years to paint like Raphael and a lifetime to paint like a child ?

But the child is animated, himself, by that “free feeling” that Jimi Hendrix would have liked his music to be named, although he resisted having his music labeled.

FREE FEELING.

Why is it so difficult to express it ? And maybe even more so in architecture, with its plethora of rationalizations…

We forgot to be child-like.

We are inhibited and inhibiting.

We think, by “knowledge.”

Come on… would “knowledge” have to be so deadly predictable ? Even when we rise all the way up to the sky, we are still quite predictable. Very little feeling, very little freedom.

So how could we design A HOUSE FOR JIMI HENDRIX, THE HOUSE OF FREE FEELING ?

Apparently before Jimi had the money to buy a guitar, he was walking around with a broom (to imitate a guitar).

BEAUTIFUL.

NOTHING SHORT THAN BEAUTIFUL.

Maybe we should ALL carry around a broom, as an expression of our utmost sincere desire, even if not (yet) satisfied, as most desires, in fact, are. Louis Kahn correctly said: “A painter does not live because of what he did, but because of what he didn’t yet do.”

The architect should do the same: be animated by desire, an irrepressible desire, for the flowing of FREE FEELING.

Architecture is rigorous, it is based on calculation. So is music. That is, they both use rigorous systems of notation and codification. But they are just means, means towards THE FREEDOM OF FEELING.

EXPLORE THIS FEELING, DEAR ARCHITECT, IF YOU ARE COURAGEOUS.

TAKE YOUR BROOM WITH YOU AND EXPLORE / EXPRESS THIS FEELING, THE HOTTER, THE BETTER, THE MORE INTENSE, THE BETTER.

We are waiting to receive from you THE HOUSE OF FREE FEELING.
