THE HOUSE OF SHADOWS

What is a shadow?

We usually relegate shadows to a “shadowy existence.”

Of course, full of “life” as we are, we cannot consider shadows seriously, particularly from a pro-active posturing.

But let’s see…

In a way a shadow is the Cain of existence.

We only love Abel.

Cain is undesirable.

And so is the shadow.

But what would the relevance of Abel be, in the absence of Cain?

And what would be the relevance of light, in the absence of shadow?

Now, “practically” speaking, shadows might become highly needed, considering global warming. A shade could save us.

But maybe even psychologically the shadow could enrich our lives, especially if consciously assumed.

So we ask you to design THE HOUSE OF SHADOWS.

The House that would choose to NOT ignore what usually IS ignored.

Design for the neglected shadows, dear architect.

And please do not forget that painting by Remedios Varo which shows a vertical shadow, whose “real” originator lies horizontally, replacing it.

Shadows could be redeeming.

Yes, spiritually as well.

Shadows question the supremacy of Apollo.

Shadows make Apollo tremble (a little).

Let’s bring the shadows to the fore.

Let’s make them dance and sing.

Let’s dedicate our building to UNLIGHT.

Yes, to darkness.

Yes, to what is hidden, not clearly expressed, obscure.

Did Rembrandt do something else with his chiaroscuro?

Most certainly not.
